The Reading Adopt-A-Family program offers support via food and gifts for local families during the holiday seasons. It is currently administered by ReadingCares and Reading Rotary, with support from several town departments. Volunteers from FCCR have always been involved in this program, as donors and as managers.

One of the key responsibilities for the management of the program is to check and confirm donations. Each “checker” is assigned a certain number of recipient families. When donations arrive for those families, the checker examines the boxes or bags to ensure that the donations are appropriate and sufficient. The checker signs off on the donation when it is ready to be picked up by the recipient family.

We would love to have more checkers sign on this year. You can try one shift, and see how you like it. This year’s distributions are Monday, November 24, and Monday, December 22. Checkers need to arrive at the Reading DPW Garage before 8:00am and they have until 10:30am to check their orders. Some choose to leave at 10:30, when the Recipients start arriving for pick up. Others stay to help load donations into Recipients’ Cars.

If you are interested, please contact Betsy betsyschneider7@gmail.com for more information. She can also give you names of other FCCR people who volunteer every year. You do need to be able to stand for periods of time, stay organized, and work with compassion. Thank you for considering this opportunity to serve our community.
